The Writing on the Wall, Chicago Brick and Mortar
The photographs contained in the section "The Writing on the Wall: Chicago Brick & Mortar" are a small sample of images I began taking in the Spring of 2005. It is a project I had been thinking about for a long time. They are images of advertisements painted on the sides of typical Chicago brick buildings. Some of the ads date back well over a hundred years. The impetus behind the project is a combination of aesthetic appeal and historical curiosity. The advertisements are, in most cases, remnants and fragments. Some are more legible than others. In some cases it has taken me months to decipher the bits of paint still clinging to the brick and more time still to research their stories. It has become a kind of artistic urban archeology.
